Patterns

Terms of Service

Last updated September 29, 2026

Patterns is operated by Grow Jungles Inc., a nonprofit organization (EIN 84-3803196). Questions: privacy@wildpatterns.co.

These terms govern your use of Patterns (app.wildpatterns.co and the Patterns mobile app), a platform that helps research institutions and field teams identify individual jaguars from camera-trap photos. By creating an account or using Patterns you agree to these terms and to our Privacy Policy.

1. Who we are

Patterns is provided by Grow Jungles Inc., a nonprofit organization (EIN 84-3803196). Grow Jungles Inc. operates Patterns in support of its conservation mission. In these terms, “we” and “us” mean Grow Jungles Inc..

2. Accounts

  • You must give accurate information, including your affiliation, and keep your password secure.
  • Patterns is meant for adults working with or volunteering for conservation and research. It is not directed at children, and you must be at least 18 (or the age of majority where you live) to create an account.
  • Accounts may belong to an institution's licence. The institution's organization admins can add, change or remove your access and see the records you contribute to their workspaces.
  • Tell us promptly at privacy@wildpatterns.co if you believe your account has been compromised.

3. Institutions and their data

Institutions own the photos, locations, station records and identifications their teams upload (“Institution Data”). We process Institution Data on the institution's behalf, as described in our Data Processing Terms. You confirm you have the right to upload what you upload, including any necessary permits and landowner or partner permissions.

4. Sensitive species locations

Jaguar locations are sensitive: they can be misused for poaching or disturbance. Patterns shows exact coordinates only to platform administrators and to the person who uploaded a photo, generalizes them for scientists (roughly 1 km) and for citizen scientists (roughly 11 km), and serves photos through signed links with GPS metadata removed. You agree not to:

  • try to recover, infer or share exact locations you have not been given;
  • re-publish locations or photos outside Patterns without the owning institution's permission;
  • use Patterns to harass, hunt, trade in or otherwise harm wildlife.

5. Cross-institution matching

To tell whether a jaguar has been seen before, Patterns compares coat patterns against the same-species catalog across institutions. A suggested match may show the matched individual's catalog code, name and a reference image. Suggestions are aids to human judgement: scientists confirm identities, and match results may be wrong.

6. Acceptable use

  • Do not upload unlawful content, malware, or photos of people taken without a lawful basis.
  • Do not probe, overload or bypass the security or access controls of Patterns.
  • Do not scrape Patterns or use it to build a competing dataset without written permission.

7. Paid plans

Institutional licences are billed through Stripe on the plan and price shown at checkout. Subscriptions renew until cancelled from the billing portal. Fees already paid are not refundable except where the law requires. We may suspend a licence for non-payment after notice.

8. Optional AI summaries

Some screens can show a short written summary of an animal's sighting history. When this feature is enabled, a brief text of facts (such as the animal's name, photo count, last-seen date and distances in kilometres) is sent to OpenAI to phrase the summary. No photos, coordinates or account details are sent.

9. Our service

We work to keep Patterns available and accurate, but it is provided “as is” without warranties of any kind, to the extent the law allows. Identification suggestions, travel distances and trends are estimates. We may change or discontinue features and will give reasonable notice of material changes.

10. Liability

To the extent the law allows, Grow Jungles Inc. is not liable for indirect or consequential losses, and our total liability for any claim is limited to the fees you or your institution paid us in the 12 months before the claim.

11. Ending use

You can stop using Patterns at any time and ask us to delete your account at privacy@wildpatterns.co. We may suspend or close accounts that break these terms. When an institution's licence ends, its data is handled as set out in the Data Processing Terms.

12. Changes and contact

We will post updated terms here and change the date above; for material changes we will notify account holders by email or in the app. Questions: privacy@wildpatterns.co.
